iMentor Launches “Bring Your Mentee to Work Day” with Over 100 Students

This spring, iMentor launched its first nationwide Bring Your Mentee to Work Day in Chicago and NYC. High school students from each program spent the day with their mentors in their workplaces to build their social capital – a network of relationships – and map out their next steps in their post-secondary paths.

In Chicago, over twenty mentors from companies including Google, Pepsi, Assist Services, Accenture, Cisco, and Ulta invited their mentees to tour offices, conduct informational interviews, and learn about various departments from senior leaders. These opportunities allowed students to envision themselves entering careers in a variety of industries and how they can prepare now to set themselves up for success.

"We had an informational interview which helped me learn about different career paths," says Yoselyn, a high school junior from Phoenix STEM Military Academy. "I was surprised to see how many different [college] majors can lead to a job at Pepsi.”

EY, Morgan Stanley, and Google sponsored Bring Your Mentee to Work Day in NYC and hosted groups of students at their headquarters. Mentors from dozens of other companies also brought their mentees to their workplaces for one-on-one visits. Students participated in workshops on speed networking, LinkedIn best practices, finding business solutions to a problem, and more as a way to gain hands-on experience and learn how employees found their paths to their careers.

“My most memorable moment today was talking to someone who is in the career path that I’m interested in and getting to know their point of view working [at EY],” says Brianna, a high school junior from the Marble Hill High School of International Studies.
